IMPHAL | Jul 6: A joint team of Imphal East district commando (CDO) and Heingang police claim to have arrested yesterday two cadres of Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) suspected to be involved in the blast which occurred at Khabam Chumbreikhong, Imphal East yesterday.
The arrestees have been identified as one Maibam Kiyamba Meitei alias Sunil, 32, son of M. Kalimohon Meitei of Jiribam Ningthem Khunou who is said to be corporal of the proscribed group, RPF under army number 3208 and another, Thoudam Prem Singh alias Premchand, 35, son of Th. Nandababu Singh of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, presently staying at Khurai Angom Leikai said to be an over ground worker of the same group.
Speaking to media during a press conference held today at the conference hall of superintendent of police (SP) Imphal East, SP, Imphal East, Jogeshchandra said a team of CDO, Imphal East unit and Heingang police along with a column of 15 Assam Rifles under the command of officer in charge, CDO Imphal East, Y. Shaktishen Singh under the overall supervision of deputy superintendent of police, Imphal East, Kh. Herojit Singh conducted an operation in and around Mantripukhri area at about 5.45 pm. The operation was conducted in connection with the blast at a godown located at Khabam Chumbreikhong, Imphal East, he added.
During the operation, the two cadres of the said group were arrested from different places. Kiyamba was arrested from the roadside opposite to NRL oil pump Chumbreikhong at 6.20 pm and Prem from HP oil pump located at Khabam Lamkhai at 6.45 pm, he said.
During interrogation both the arrestees stated that they made monetary demand of Rs. 2 lakhs from a shop located at Khabam Lamkhai and they came to collect the money from the owner of the shop. Kiyamba further told the police that about eight days before on the advice of one Dayand of the same group, he went to a residence at Singjamei area and enquired about the monetary demand which the group had made earlier before.
On further spot investigation, the joint team recovered five Chinese made hand grenades, one 36 hand grenade, thirteen live ammunitions of AK rifles, three detonators, three hand grenade levers, three hand grenade strikers, three mobile phones along with SIM cards, one wallet, one car (TATA Nano) bearing registration number MN-01S/1528 and three loose SIM cards.
Among the seized items, the ammunitions and explosives were recovered near a culvert which has been built over a drain adjacent to Amway godown. The recovered items are suspected to be hidden by the arrestees, said Jogeshchandra.
The arrestees along with the seized items have been handed over to Heingang police for further necessary legal action. They were produced before CJM/IE and were given seven days police remand.
Meanwhile, the proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) has stated that the arrested person are not connected with the bomb blast that occurred on July 5 at a godown located in Khabam lamkhai, Imphal East district, in a release signed by assistant secretary, publicity, Bangkim.
