Kohima, May 1 (EMN): As part of commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. T Ao trophy, Nagaland state football team of U-15 girls was enrolled to participate in the Gothia Cup—an international football cup, to be held from July 14 to 20, at Gothenburg, in Sweden.
In line with this, the Soccer Competition of Germany in collaboration with the department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) is conducting a training session for selecting the U-15 girls’ football team.
This was announced by the YRS and the Soccer Competition of Germany, at a press interaction at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, in Kohima on May 1.
At the joint effort of department and Mike Mirucki, Chief Executive Officer of Soccer Competition Germany, a FIFA grade A Coach Sebastian Rasmussen was invited to prepare the team to participate in the football cup. The state team-‘Sports Club Nagaland’ will be playing in the international youth football tournament.
By far, 16 out of 27 trainees from various districts have been selected to participate at the forthcoming tournament. The department informed that the selection of players is still ongoing on all the working days from 3:30pm to 5pm, at IG Stadium. Interested players under-15 are invited to come forward for selection trials.
CEO Mirucki said the cup was one of the world’s largest international youth football tournament held annually. Around 1700 teams from 80 nations participate and they play 4500 games on 110 fields, he informed.
The preparatory training had started in the month of March and will go till the first week of July before the team participates in the international tournament, he added.
Rasmussen, who is coaching since 2009, said that the girls are doing “good” but positioning in the field is still lacking. They have all the potentials and talent to play according to the coach. Yet, there are very little or no premier leagues and other platforms in the state for them to excel or take to the next level.
He felt that the girls need to do a lot of training with their respective position on the field.
It may be mentioned that Lanvungthung Khuvung was selected by the Real Sports Association in 2016 to play as striker at Gothia Cup in Sweden.
For boys’ category, advisor of YRS Zale Neikha, who was at the interaction informed that the Bhaichung Bhutia will do the trainings.
About the Dr T Ao tournament which was scheduled in April this year had been postponed owing to enforcement of the Election Code of Conduct. He said that a meeting in regard to this will be held after the ongoing election. Commenting on the floodlights at IG Stadium, he said that it’s all ready except for the generator which is yet to reach the state.
