UKHRUL | Oct 2: A commemoration programme was held to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi along with observation of Plastic Waste Shramdaan, in collaboration with PHED, Ukhurl where deputy commissioner of Ukhrul, Joseph Pauline Kamson announced that Ukhrul district will ban single use plastics from today onwards.

Single-use plastic products like bags, bottles, plates, straws, sachets and cups will be some of the items that will be banned in Ukhrul, he said. Along with the announcement of banning single use plastics, Joseph Pauline appealed the populace of Ukhrul to refrain from using single-use plastic products. He stated that Ukhrul has been keeping and maintaining their town clean and is one of the cleanest districts in Manipur and said, “We should take the lead in banning the use of plastic in kitchen and everyday life.”

Joseph Pauline Kamson lauded the initiatives of PHED for monitoring the ban in serious manner. “Gandhi is immortal let us all try to emulate his teachings and living example,” stated Joseph Pauline Kamson. The Swachhata Pledge was read out by DC and followed by the gathering.

Chairman ADC Ukhrul, Yaronsho Ngalung in his speech elaborated about the impact of plastic in health and environment. He stated that minimal use and safe disposal of plastic materials is the need of the hour and promised to extend maximum co-operation in making the environment clean and healthy.

Yaronsho Ngalung while paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi reminded that non-violence was the main tool of Gandhi in freeing India from the yoke of British. He stated that like Gandhi, the ongoing Indo-Naga peace talks and all other issues should be resolved peacefully and not through military force.

Later, the participants led by chairman ADC Ukhrul, DC Ukhrul, executive engineer, PHED Ukhrul, additional, SP Ukhrul and SDOs of Ukhrul and LM Block joined the rally from Mini Secretariat Complex to Gandhi Statue, Phungreitang.

During the programme, appreciation and acknowledgement certificate were distributed to ADC Ukhrul, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Awontang and IHAO Group for their contribution towards Swachhata Hi Seva campiagn.
