IMPHAL | Aug 19: A WhatsApp group called Manipur Updates concluded its 9th edition of tree plantation programme which have been ongoing under the first season of its Mission Green Manipur (MGM), at Kanga Ching Tellou, Lamlai yesterday.

The group was formed by like-minded people and the mission for plantation of trees was launched on May 12, 2019 at Kangla.

Speaking to IFP, a member of the group, Keisham Ranbir said the mission was launched with an aim to regain greenery in the State. With the advancing of information and technology and increasing number of motor vehicles including construction of roads, most of the trees are being cut down, he said. Though the public now has the feasibility in transportation and can travel to remote areas in short period of time, they have failed to realise how such changes have affected the environment in an adverse manner, he added.

Ranbir said with mass deforestation in the name of development, the State has been facing sudden change in its climatic conditions. Citing an example, he said this year’s untimely monsoon rain and grievances faced by farmers is one of the example of the impact of deforestation without taking precautionary measures, he asserted.

He said with the completion of 9th edition of tree plantation the group has planted a total of 2428 trees including fruit bearing and non-fruit bearing trees at different locations.

On the launching of MGM, the group planted 70 saplings at Kangla; on May 26 the group planted 126 saplings at Khongjom war memorial complex; on June 1, 38 saplings were planted at C.C. higher secondary school; on June 5 they planted 130 saplings at Kekru Pat and Imphal East; on June 9 they planted 800 saplings at Marjing Polo Complex, Heingang; on June 23, 270 saplings were planted at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband; on June 30 they planted 80 saplings at Khuman Lampak Stadium, near Archery ground; on July 7 they planted 200 saplings at Takmu Water Resort, Moirang and Chaoba Ching Thanga and 214 saplings were planted at Nongmaijing Ching; Awaa Ching (Robinhood Ningshing Khubham) on July 21 and on the last day of the first session the group planted 500 saplings.

He urged the authority concerned to take precautionary measures before cutting down trees in the name of bringing development in the State. Maintenance of the saplings will be done by the members of the group each Sunday before second season of the tree plantation programme commences, he added.
