DIMAPUR, MAY 7 (MExN): A resident of Zunheboto today alleged that he and his family were subject to “harassment” as Assam Rifles jawans conducted a search of their residence on the night of May 5 “without any reasons.”

Henito Kibami, who issued a press statement today said: “On the night of May 5 at around 9 pm when my whole family had just gone to sleep, to my utter surprise, the jawans of 32 Assam Rifles, Zunheboto came to my house and woke the whole family including my young children without any reasons.”

Kibami added that he along with his wife tried to identify themselves by producing their identity cards as they are both government servants. “I also tried to convince the officer that I am a family man and a peaceful citizen and that I am in no way connected to underground factions. However, in spite of my repeated appeal, the jawans demanded me to surrender my arms and ammunitions and then thoroughly searched my entire house for nearly an hour,” the statement informed.

“Such act of harassment meted to the innocent and peace loving citizen is condemned and which should be condemned by one and all. Fear psychosis and insecurity is infused in the minds of my innocent young children. I and my family will always be a peaceful and law abiding citizen and as government servants will always be sincere in discharging our duties,” it added.

He further appealed to the 32 Assam Rifles that “such sorts of harassment should not be meted to the innocent citizens in the days to come,” and urged law enforcing agencies to ensure that “such harassment to the innocent public is curbed in future.”
